“But I really needed that class…”

Even though registration for the Spring Semester 2014 has just about finished I’d like to offer you all a few tips on how to make the process easier for next semester! Many students are saying, “but I needed that class…” because they are being held up by holds and not being able to get into specific classes. Looking at what classes are being offered is exciting but being proactive leading up to this time in the semester can only benefit you in the end.

For starters, at the beginning of each semester take a look at your account to see if your financial aid came through and if not, call right away! This office is not one to put off talking to till the last week of advising. The process of getting loans, finding them, and paying for school can get overwhelming but the earlier that you go and talk to you someone the better off you will be. Their webpage can be easily searched on the salemstate.edu site. The regular office hours are Monday-Thursday 8:30am-5:30pm and Friday 9:30am-5pm. However, they do offer extended hours on Friday at the first week of each semester. From having to work with that office myself and many of my friends, I am letting you know that it does take time so be patient but get to the office sooner rather than later!

Another piece of advice I can give you is if you cannot get into a class email the Department Head as soon as possible, especially if you have a later registration time. This will make your life a lot easier when it comes time to getting the class because there will be that extra seat available. If they cannot help you out go to the time of the class on the first day of the semester and talk to the professor. Many students don’t take advantage of this but professors do the best they can to getting you into their class. Even email them ahead of time so they know you are coming and establish that relationship early on so they know you are responsible and want to be in their class. Sometimes students wait to long and once they get to their senior year they could be credits short. Don’t let that be you!

These are just a few tips in getting registered on time but do the best that you can because it will all pay off. Being stressed out and avoiding your holds will only prolong the registration process. The school will do their part but you have to do yours! Try to get ahead as early as possible!
