When you first come to Salem State, if you’re dorming, they put you in a two week room mate freeze. In this time you can’t switch rooms, room mates or buildings. The school does this to give you a chance to calm down from moving in, taking classes and anything else and get a chance to know your room mate, floor and building. I love this idea but not only for the building or room you’re in but also for where you spend your weekends. You will be very tempted to go home that first or second weekend but I would suggest trying to avoid that. The weekends, especially the first month of them, are a great time to get to know the campus and people around you. Take a four weekend freeze and get to know the people you will be living with for the next year. Attend weekend events held by the various campus groups, go see a movie Downtown or just explore Downtown with a group of people from your building or floor. Staying on campus during the weekends makes you feel more a part of the SSU community. If you get really homesick invite your friends or family up here and show them around, but try and stay on campus and create roots here and feel more included in the SSU community.
