Living in Salem we have access to many interesting and free activities, not only in Salem but Boston as well. As college students we have access to so many museums, theaters and shows for free.So if you ever want to mix it up and go out into Salem or Boston and experience something new for nothing at all or only the cost of a train ticket check out these options.

Salem Area:

Peabody Essex Museum: As students at SSU we actually get free admittance to the Peabody Essex Museum. Their hours are 10-5pm Tuesday through Sunday and every third Thursday of the month they’re open until 9pm. To gain access to the museum just show them your clipper card.

Harbor Sweets on Leavitt Street: Established in 1973 this candy shop boasts the “best piece of candy in the world” which they named Sweet Sloops. They hold tours of their factory on Tuesdays and Thursdays pretty regularly at 11:00am. To set up a tour it is suggested that you call 800-234-4860

House of the Seven Gables: At the House of the Seven Gables you can tour the property which includes Nathanial Hawthorne’s house. You can also attend a lecture in the Seven Lectures at the Seven Gables Series which begins in March.

Boston Area:

Boston Public Library Museum Passes: The Boston Public Library offers free museum passes for library card holders. To reserve a pass you can do so online, in person or over the phone. To reserve a pass or passes you need a valid Library card. Passes can be used to get into the Museum of Fine Arts, New England Aquarium and at the Museum of Science you can get in for a discounted $10 with the pass.

Brattle Theater: Located in Cambridge this movie theater shows week long runs of independent to cutting edge movies.  Past movie showings include a Bugs Bunny film festival, the local premiere of a Russian director’s movie, and a week of Terrence Malick films. Tickets are $10 for students.

Tour of the state House:  Explore the seat of our state government and learn how it functions and the history behind the building it takes place in. Tours of the State House are held during the week from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
