It’s getting to that time in the semester that a lot of students are starting to think about how badly they can bomb their final test or paper. They start to look at Canvas to see what their grade is as of right now and if there is anyway to bring it up within the next six weeks. One of the easiest ways to improve your grade is to participate in class. Most professors will make Class Participation count anywhere from 5% to 30% of your final grade. At the beginning of the semester 5% may not seem like a big deal but when you find that you are struggling in a class and it’s too late to withdraw every little point helps you pass the class, so here are some tips to help you get those participation points.
1. Show up for class!- Class Participation is often paired with Attendance, so to get the most out of your class and get those extra Participation points showing up is a big step in the right direction.
2. Be In class- While getting to class is half the battle don’t forget to actually listen and pay attention while in class. Most of us by this point are getting little to no sleep because of all the projects and life commitments we have going on but if you show up to class only to sleep in it the professor will definitely notice and will not give you a good participation score. So if you show up to class be in class. Listen to questions other students have and if you have any remaining questions after the professor answers them ask them. If the lecture isn’t making sense to you ask a question about a point that is really confusing to you.
3. Prepare Questions Ahead of Time- Going over the readings for class or doing the homework is a great way to think up questions for class discussion. Most of the time professors assign readings hoping that you understand everything inside of them, but most of them know that some concepts will go over your head. Write down questions while doing the readings or homework and be prepared to get that extra 5% boost.
Professors never want you to fail their class because not only does it look bad on you it also kind of looks bad on them, so most of them will be very willing to help you out to their fullest capabilities. However if you don’t show up or participate in class there isn’t much they can do for you. So strive to make the greatest effort on your part to get the most out of these last six weeks of classes.
