Let’s be honest, during your first year of college it’s tempting to skip classes. Your professors aren’t as strict about attendance, and in September you might have had trouble motivating yourself to wake up for that 8am twice a week. Suddenly you realize you’ve been missing class a lot. Maybe 4 or 5 times already. When you check the syllabus and realize attendence often counts for a percentage of your grade you might begin to panic. Maybe you suddenly realize you don’t have enough notes to study for the test. It’s only halway thrugh the semester, so with some hard work you can still turn things around. Here’s a step by step guide:
- Start attending that class!
This seems like a basic step but it can sometimes be dificult. It might be hard for you to get up early in the morning (try using your phone to set multiple alarms). You might even be embarssed to return to class after you haven’t seen your professor in awhile. Here’s where my next tip comes in…
2. Talk to your professor
Your professor has probably noticed your absence, so the best thing to do is just own up to it. Meet with your professor after class of during their office hours, and explain to them that you know you’ve missed a lot of class and you’re determined to turn things around! They’ll be more understanding and willing to help you catch up if you awknowledge your absence and let them know you’re really trying now. If you’ve missed any assignments, ask them if it’s too late to turn them in (even if its for a reduced grade, a low grade is better than a zero!)
3. Catch up on those late assignments
It’s no fun spending a Saturday making up late work but when you pass that class it’ll all be worth it. You can do it!
4. Get notes from a classmate
Talk to a classmate and ask to look over their notes from the classes you missed or even copy them. Who knows? You might even make a new study partner or even friend!
5. Stay motivated
Once you turn things around in that class, don’t be tempted to fall into the same pattern of missing classes again. Stay motiviated and keep up the good work. Finish the semester strong!
Just remeber, it may not be easy to turn things around after missing several classes, but with some communication and a little hard work you can turn things around.
