I want to talk to you today about the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone and some ways in which you can do so while here at Salem State.
Finding yourself and trying new things is really important and a really exciting part of your first year in college! Salem State is the perfect place to explore and do something you normally wouldn’t. Here are a few of the ways you can get involved:
- Join a club on campus!– There are so many different clubs and groups here at SSU that you’re sure to find something that suits your interests. Some examples include the Gender & Sexuality Alliance, the Women’s Center, the Community Service group, ad club, and the Sci-Fi club, just to name a few. Also, if you think you have a great idea for a group/club you can start one of your own! (You need at least a minimum of 7 members and a faculty advisor for support) For example, I just recently joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon, one of the fraternity’s here on campus.
- Talk to someone new– Make it a goal to reach out to someone who you normally wouldn’t talk to. Simply just saying hi with a smile can help spark a conversation where the two of you find things in common and where that stranger could turn into a lifelong friend.
- Travel & Explore– Whether it’s walking to downtown Salem with all the shops, exhibits, and great restaurants, visiting the nearby Hyde Park, or going to study abroad to somewhere like Spain, Italy, Africa, or Australia.
- Take a Class Outside of Your Major– Salem State offers so many classes across varied disciplines from art to sciences to history to business, just to name a few. So, if you’re a business major step outside of what you know and explore a class on glass blowing for example. Or if you’re a biology major, take an elective on Women’s Studies.
Just remember: college is about having fun and taking in all the new experiences and opportunities that you’re presented with. I know that if you take some time to pursue something new & exciting that you never thought you would do, you may just find that you’ll be on your way to making new friends, traveling the world, and fitting in at Salem State better than ever!
