Getting Creative

Hey all!

If you’re anything like me, you can’t just sit still. You can’t always lay in bed and watch Netflix. You can’t just sit around doing nothing. Sometimes, going for a jog is fun, or going for a walk. Sometimes you can go out and do something, but what about on a day like today? It’s raining, it’s windy, it’s a bit chilly… a jog in this weather wouldn’t be fun! I have the answer for you: It’s time to

get creative

Getting creative can be many different things. For me, it’s writing. A few years ago I broke my leg and was bedridden for a few months, so I wrote every day. For some people, it’s drawing, painting, sculpting, or even little arts and crafts projects. The best thing about getting creative is it can be anything you want it to be.

Getting creative can be helpful academically and for your mental health! Think about it for a moment. Let’s say every week you get creative for one hour, that would help you stay on track academically, it would help you bring a different spin on your homework, essays, papers, and other academics, and it helps you relax. Just one hour a week. You’d be surprised how your life will change!

Here are some things you can do:

  • Writing prompts
  • Get a coloring book! Color!
  • Draw/Paint
  • Sculpt
  • Learn a new instrument
  • Learn to sing
  • Take a class — Art, Music, Writing, anything like that! It’ll be anywhere between 1 and 6 hours a week of creativity, plus you’ll get credit for it!
  • Go to Plaster Fun Time. (If you have never gone, go right now. It’s amazing.)
  • Rearrange your room
  • Get a camera or grab your phone and take some photos
  • Learn more about Graphic Design

My personal favorite is the “30 Circles Test.” This amazing creative exercise comes from researcher Bob McKim, and Tim Brown mentioned it in his TED talk Creativity and Play. Here’s what you’ll do. Take a piece of paper and draw 30 circles (you may need more paper). In one minute, adapt as many circles as you can into objects. One circle could be a smiley face, another could be a sun, or a globe. How many can you do? For this test, quantity over quality! You can always go back and make them pretty.

Most people have a hard time getting through all 30, and if you can do it let us know by sending us a picture!

Around this time of year, creativity is a great way to relieve stress. Try something on this list, you never know what you could discover about yourself.

Now, you’re just a little bit more like Kanye:

Have a great semester!
