Hello fellow Vikings! It’s that time of year again–advising! This can be a stressful time for students because while you’re taking classes now, you have to think about the classes you will be taking next semester!
Well here are a few tips to help you with advising and what to bring to your advising appointment!
- Make an advising appointment! This is the most important step of the advising period. Every student here at Salem State has a faculty advisor and is required to make an appointment with them. You get a special code from them that allows you to register for classes on the day you register! Without this appointment, you can’t register!
Don’t know who your advisor is? Look at Navigator! First, login. Under “Quick Links” you will see “My Advisors”, so click that!
After clicking, you will see this page! It will list your Academic Program, your Major, and who your advisor is!
You’ll be able to find your advisor’s office through your department’s directory. Often they will post a sign-up sheet of dates and times they are available! Some professors also email out a sign-up sheet to their advisees, so check your Salem State emails!
- Have a schedule planned before your advising appointment! Your advisor can help you with making sure that your schedule is manageable and has enough required classes. Coming with no schedule doesn’t help your advisor know what classes you are interested in or what career path you are on! Don’t know how to access classes before your appointment? I can help with that too! Under “Quick Links” on your Navigator account is “Registration”!
After, you will click “Fall 2016” then “Continue”!
Then you will see this page…
…and either type in the Class Number or click “Search” and you can look my major or times! This way you can plan your schedule ahead of time!
Do you know how to find the classes you need to fulfill your major? Look at your Degree Tracker and see how far along you are to completing your degree! FYM Kaitlynn made a post last semester about it! Take a look!
- Faculty Advisor not working out? See an Academic Advisor! Sometimes you and your faculty advisor don’t see eye-to-eye. It happens! Still sign-up for an advising time with your faculty advisor, just in case you cannot get into an appointment with academic advising!
Call ahead at 978-542-7049 to make an appointment! If you are able to get in, you can remove your name from your faculty advisor’s sign-up sheet! You can still get the code from the academic advisor you meet with!
- Prepare questions! Have concerns about your Degree Tracker? Want to know more about how to go towards your career path? Your advisor can help! Preparing questions to ask can help the appointment run smoothly (and it can get out much earlier).
Good luck with advising and registration! With these tips, you’ll kill it!
