Brewing the pot of Student Activism with DarkMatter

Copy of Copy of DSC03160

Looking for something entertaining to do this Thursday? The Alliance, with co-sponsorship by First Year Experience, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Program Council are having DarkMatter come to campus! For those of you that don’t know, DarkMatter is a trans south asian performance art duo comprised of Alok Vaid-Menon and Janani Balasubramanian. Based in New York City, DarkMatter regularly performs to sold-out houses at venues like La MaMa Experimental Theater, Nuyorican Poets Café, and the Asian American Writer’s Workshop.

DarkMatter was recently part of the Public Theater’s Under the Radar Festival as well as the Queer International Arts Festival. Known for their quirky aesthetic and political panache, DarkMatter has been invited to perform at stages and universities across the world. We are so excited to have them at Salem State to bring attention to issues regarding race, gender, sexuality, class, and much more! Their tour that this performance is a part of is titled #ItGetsBitter.

#ItGetsBitter is an interruption: a hybrid mixture of art and activism, poetry and polemic, giggles and gasps. #ItGetsBitter is a remix of spoken word, stand up comedy, fashion, and nursery rhymes. DarkMatter shares stories of navigating the world in all of its ordinariness and peculiarity as trans South Asians, taking the audience on an emotional roller coaster all of the way from the personal to the political. Join us for an evening of poetry and healing as we not only critique – but imagine new ways of being and resisting together.

The event will be held in the South Campus Gym on April 7th and doors will be opening at 5:30, and the show will start at 6 pm! Tickets are going to be on sale in the Alliance office (Ellison Campus Center, 206) all week, and will also be sold at the door! The tickets will be $10 for SSU students with an I.D, $15 for Non-SSU students, and $8 for Alpha Lambda Delta Members with proof of membership (picture or copy of ALD certificate)

Make sure to come out and enjoy this colorful performance and joining the activism brewing at Salem State University!
