Hey there, First Years!
Did you know that looking at cute pictures of animals can boost your productivity? There was a study conducted in 2013 by Japanese researcher, Hiroshi Nittono that concluded that looking at cute pictures of animals really can help you be more productive! The study itself focuses on being at work, but being a student is work! Take a few moments to look at the cute pictures of animals below, then get back to studying, or working on your papers, assignments, quizzes, exams, and anything else you could be working on.
The study showed that “participants performed tasks requiring focused attention more carefully after viewing cute images” (Bennett-Smith, Looking At Cute…). It is believed that looking at the cuteness triggers positive emotion, that in turn causes a narrowed attentional focus. The students who looked at adult animals or food performed worse than the students who looked at cute animals. So this proves it! Before you start studying, google search “cute pictures of animals” and enjoy yourself for a couple minutes.
If you’d prefer to stick to the same cute animals they used in the study, don’t worry about it! I got you. You could look at pictures of puppies, panda cams, and grumpy cat videos.
Remember, this is good to boost productivity but should not be used as an excuse to not do your homework. Use pictures as rewards for getting through parts of major assignments, or for completing minor assignments! 🙂
Good luck with the rest of your semester,
